Somewhere in Dreamworld

Lyrics

What happens to your mind
At the end of your final day?
Does it up and disappear
Or does it find a place to stay?
Because the end could be near
It’s been a hell of a year
It’s been a hell of a life
Of always being afraid, and
Deep down inside I think
That it’s only a dream
That the weight of the world
Ain’t my reality, ‘cause
I’m tired of trying
And of trudging along
I just wanna wake up
Because I feel…

Chorus

So gone!
Stranded in this nightmare for so long!
I cannot be saved by anyone!
I cannot be saved!

I can’t recall the last time
When I felt alive
When I could show off a smile
And really feel it inside
See, I’m dragging the chains
Of my shame and my pain
And yet I try to maintain
That I am not insane!
I struggle, I fight
I kick and I scream
But I don’t have the strength
To break out of this dream
It’s so heavy; I’m worthless
And I don’t belong
Get me out of this place!

(Chorus)

So save me!

(Chorus)

Trivia

The main piano motif was written in a music shop called Downtown Sound in New Prague, MN. Bryce sat down at one of the showroom keyboards (circa 2003) and improvised the motif. The shop owner loved it so much, he asked Bryce to keep playing so he could add cymbal swells and an improvised trumpet part. The motif remained unnamed for several years until it finally became “Somewhere in Dreamworld.”

Bryce always intended this track as an homage to Linkin Park. At the time of writing it, however, he did not believe he was capable of performing rap. Instead, he chose a spoken-word delivery style for the verses. It always bothered him. In some versions, he tried singing the verses, but that didn’t sit well either. After receiving feedback in 2017 that the lyrics were too weak; and after the passing of Linkin Park’s singer, Chester Bennington, Bryce felt inspired to embrace the rap influence and rewrite the song. The line “it’s so heavy” is a direct reference to “Heavy” by Linkin Park (feat Kiiara).

There is an acoustic version of this song that has not been recorded, but has been featured at a number of acoustic shows (see: Extras, below).

Original Lyrics:

Where does your mind go
When you’ve finally lost your way?
Does it all just disappear
Or does it find somewhere to stay?
Please tell me I’m dreaming
This world I know just can’t be real
This counterfeit reality just
Tears me up and makes me feel...

Chorus:
So gone... (gone in a memory)
I knew of this problem
All along... (lost in a dream)
I cannot be saved by
Anyone... (nothing is just what it seems)
I cannot be saved...

Why can’t I wake up,
Or will it make a difference at all?
The gap between my wake and my sleep
Is incredibly and infinitely small
I want to stop dreaming
This nightmare is so unreal
I struggle, I fight, I kick and I SCREAM!!!
All of this just makes me feel...

(chorus)
