Trivia

The coda/outro section of “Reminiscent” shares the same musical motif as the bridge and outro sections in the following track, “Sidewalk.” The two songs are meant to be paired together, with “Reminiscent” playing the part of an extended intro. They were not written at the same time, however. The main motif of “Reminiscent” shares the same key signature as “Sidewalk” by complete accident (D minor, “the saddest of all keys”).

“Reminiscent” not only replaces the original piano opening to “Sidewalk,” but also replaces “Somewhere in Dreamworld” in the tack order. The album was always meant to have a dip in energy with a somber piano piece in the middle. When the title track became the closing song, “Reminiscent” took its place.

This is the second album in a row where a piano instrumental was written by accident while attempting to write parts for a different song on the same record (see: “A Far Fall Away From All” from March to Midnight). However, “Reminiscent” was written first.

The working title (circa 2008) was “Yesterday (Instrumental).” It was a reference to the old “Sidewalk” chorus lyrics: “Only yesterday fine, but now where’s my mind?” When the lyrics were updated (and after several snarky comments about a famous Beatles song), the title was changed to “Reminiscent.”

Bryce is self-taught on the piano. He has a long history of playing simple chords with his left hand while playing one-finger lead lines with his right hand. “Reminiscent” exists because of a personal challenge to write more complicated pieces. It features hand-crossing, time signature changes, and tempo variations, making it the most complicated piano piece he has written so far.
